The Mod Woman Book Club Black Lives Matter Summer Reading, Watching and Listening List
Hello all. It’s been awhile. I wasn’t planning on taking a break from posting but I needed to. The last month has been psychologically and emotionally exhausting and tough. After what happened in Minneapolis and what has been happening since, I haven’t felt like posting. I had nothing to say. Other than to scream from the rooftop BLACK LIVES MATTER. The emotional toll of seeing black bodies brutalized is real. It’s tangible. I’ve been spending most of my time on social media on Instagram posting information and resources.
I also turned 40 last week. Which was surreal on a number of levels. I spent my big 4-0 in lockdown instead of in Paris which was my original plan. It felt weird to be celebrating at such a time. I had macarons and steak in my apartment instead of a visit to the Eiffel Tower. It wasn’t a bad day. But it wasn’t the day I had envisioned.

I’ve been struggling to decide how I wanted to address what’s been going on (and has always been going on btw) in this country. The Mod Woman was created to be a safe space for me and my passions and the things that bring me joy. But to continue posting about makeup, fashion and other things feels dishonest on regards to what is on my mind and in my heart. And so I decided to merge some things. I was going to post my The Mod Woman Book Club Summer reading list. I decided to also post a reading list and a watch list. I hope that those of you reading this will take the time to become actively anti-racist. It is no longer enough to say “I’m not racist”. It simply isn’t. Unless you are working to help dismantle the institutionalized and systemic racism that informs every aspect of ALL our lives you are part of the problem. And so I hope you will take the time to read, watch and listen. And for the All Lives Matter brigade: Save it. You can’t say all lives matter and not believe that black lives matter.
And to those of you who want to learn, grow and be an ally, welcome to the fight. Now please do the work to educate yourselves.
