Fall Fashion Series: Clothing Items I've Stopped Purchasing

Fall Fashion Series: Clothing Items I've Stopped Purchasing

We are halfway through August and I am starting to access my wardrobe for the upcoming fall season. I don’t plan on purchasing a ton of things, just a few to round out my wardrobe. For me this past year has been about what I no longer want to spend my money on. I’m finding as I’ve gotten older that there are certain so-called “classics” and “staples” that I have no interest in buying or wearing. They don’t fit my aesthetic or I simply don’t like the way I look in them.

Button Down Shirts

I love a great classic blue and white striped button down for spring and summer to tuck into skirts or pair with jeans or pants. But white (and black) button downs have never been my jam. I equate them with wearing a uniform. Mainly because I used to have to wear them as part of a uniform in a job I had when I was younger. White button downs feel non-descript and blah to me. Not to mention the fact that they need to be replaced frequently since they yellow over time. It took me awhile to realize this and I used to buy tons of white - and black - button downs and then not want to wear them or when I did not feel all that great in them.

Silky Blouses

These always seem like a good idea in theory. Until I actually buy one and then it just sits in my closet.

Socks

Unless it’s the dead of winter and I am wearing them in boots I have no interest in socks. I wear tights during the fall and that’s enough for me.

Stiletto Pumps

These kind of went out of style for awhile and I was SO glad, And so were my feet. I used to rock stiletto heels pretty much everyday. And now…not so much. I don’t like them. They look dated to me. I have really been loving the resurgence of chunkier heels. You get the perfect combo of fashion and comfort. Not to mention that after years of heel-wearing my feet have started to rebel.

Black Pants

Don’t get me wrong. I own black pants. I even wear them. But I’m not happy about it. I love a great pair of pants. Especially wide leg pants. But for me my style is more about having items that excite me and that feel special. I wear a TON of black in the winter so they still get use but I don’t feel the need to add any more to my wardrobe.

Skinny Jeans

This is a tough one for me and I may go back on this but, I’m kind of over skinny jeans. Sure they are great to pair with boots in the fall but other than that - meh. I have been investing lately in high-waist wide leg jeans that I have been loving and that’s where an future investment in jeans will be going.

Cardigans

When I say cardigans I mean specifically the shorter version. I love a good cardigan duster or long-line sweater cardigan. But the ones sold in the Talbot’ catalog. The short classic knit versions. Yeah…no. I used to love them. I owned a bunch in several colors and would pair them with belts. But my style has changed so much since then. I’ve given the majority of them away with the exception of a few but I will not be adding anymore to my wardrobe going forward.

What items are you banishing from your wardrobe or will not longer be buying? Let me know in the comments!
