Five Things To Do in Chicago This Month
One of the perks of living in a major city, is that no matter the season there is always something to do. One of my goals this Winter has been not to be such a hibernating bear and get out more. It does wonders at keeping the good old seasonal depression at bay. Listed below are some events to try out here in Chi-town this month that are fun, whether you are a resident or a tourist.
Maggie Daley Park Skating Ribbon
A family-friendly outdoor skating ribbon in the heart of downtown Chicago. The thing that sets this ribbon apart from other rinks is the way that it is integrated into the park landscape. It's modern and cool. Admission is free (rental skates are available for $12-14) and there is hot chocolate available for purchase
The Field Museum Free Days
January 27 & 28th
Museums are not as affordable as they used to be. So anytime the local museums have free days you want to take advantage of it. Growing up we went to The Field (as it's know here in Chicago) every other weekend. It is a fun outing for kids, but I find it thoroughly enjoyable as an adult. General admission is free for that weekend but tickets for any special exhibits will need to be purchased.
Polar Adventure Days at Northerly Island
January 20th
Tour the Northerly Island and view wolves, huskies and other wildlife such as birds of prey from Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation. There's hot chocolate, winter crafts and even snowshoes!
First Bites Bash at Navy Pier
January 25th
The official kick off of the 11th annual Chicago Restaurant Week, First Bites features food tastings from 60 Chicago restaurants and chefs. Held in the AON Grand Ballroom on Navy Pier. This is not a cheap event (General admission tickets are $125), but a portion of the proceeds go to the Greater Chicago Food Depository - a food bank that has worked to feed Chicago's poor since 1979. You can view a list of participating restaurants here.
Chicago Restaurant Week
January 26 - February 8
370 Chicago restaurants participate in the 11th annual two week event. Prix Fixe lunch & brunch menus are $22. Prix Fixe dinner menus $33 to $44. Check out a list of participating restaurants here.
