My Favorite Albums of 2019

My Favorite Albums of 2019

This was a tough list for me because a lot of the music I listen to wasn’t released this year. I listen to Spotify and tend to just listen to my “Liked songs” playlist and I tend to add songs more than I add whole albums. But I did have some real favorites this years and so I decided to compile a -short- list of them. These are the albums/artists I made a point of saving to my Albums list and have been listening to on repeat.

  1. Billie Eilish - When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?

On my Spotify rewind Billie Eilish was my Artist of the Year. Which was no surprise to me because her music was in HEAVY rotation this year for me. Especially once her full debut album came out. I am a Billie Eilish fan I adore her and her music and this was easily my number one album of the year. My favorite songs on the album are Bury a Friend, I Love You, and ilomilo.

2. Beyonce - Homecoming: The Live Album

Probably the only album I bumped as much as Billie’s was Beyonce’s live album of her Coachella performance, Homecoming. I watched the first performance live on YouTube and then watched the HBO documentary of the preparation for the shows. This album is….amazing. The album and the performance was so unapologetically black and beautiful. It lifts my heart every time I listen to it and it was on repeat for a good two months when it first came out.

3. FKA Twigs - Mary Magdalene

This album is currently on heavy repeat for me. I have been a huge fan of FKA Twigs for awhile now and her first full length album does not disappoint. It is beautiful. ethereal yet earthy and very well thought out. I so wanted to see her when she came to Chicago last month but her tickets sold out and were going for three times the face value so…yeah it was a no go for me on that one. But the album is still a definite favorite for me this year. My personal favorite songs are Sad Day, Fallen Alien and Mirrored Heart.

4. Banks - III

I am a longtime Banks fan. I love her first two albums and her third one, III, quickly became a favorite this year. I got to see her perform the album live and seeing her live show made me fall in love with the album even more. Faves on the album are Till Now, Stroke, Hawaiian Mazes and Alaska.

5. H.E.R. - I Used To Know Her

H.E.R. is an artist whose music I listen to without really paying attention to which album a song came from. So I knew I wanted to include her latest album but I didn’t know which one! But I figured it out and it actually worked out perfectly because this album features so many of my favorite songs of her’s (no pun intended). Feel a Way, 21, Against Me… there are so many bops on this album.

6. Stormzy - Heavy Is The Head

I have a confession: I only recently started listening to Stormzy. I knew who he was but I had never paid much attention to his music. He simply isn’t that big of a deal here in the States as he is in the UK. But since I started listening to him, his songs have been at the top of my Liked Songs lists. I’ve been listening to his latest album in bits and pieces but collectively it has quickly become a fave for me this year. Wiley Flow and Vossi Bop along with Big Michael are my personal favorites. I also want to give a big nod to his 2017 album, Gangs Signs & Prayer. It’s SO good!

So that is my very short list of favorite albums of 2019. I have a TON of favorite songs of 2019 and maybe I will make a separate post for those. Let me know if you would be interested in the comments.
